peppermint mocha recipe

The holiday season always has me craving yummy seasonal drinks! It is fine to splurge once in a while on a coffee shop drink but these days one drink will set you back about $5-6. This peppermint mocha recipe can be made either hot or iced and only takes 5 minutes to make! I love this recipe because you can customize and use your favorite sweetener and milk. If the coffee shop drinks are too sweet you get to adjust to your taste. Make it how you like it right at home!

What is a Peppermint Mocha?

A peppermint mocha has espresso, steamed milk, some kind of chocolate component (chocolate sauce or cocoa powder), and peppermint syrup or extract and sweetener.

Ingredients

Ingredients

How to Make a Peppermint Mocha

Hot Peppermint Mocha

  1. Add brewed espresso or strong coffee to a mug.
  2. Stir in cocoa powder, sugar, and peppermint extract until well mixed.
  3. Steam the milk and pour it over the top. Top with whipped cream and crushed candy canes if desired. Serve.

Iced Peppermint Mocha

  1. Add brewed espresso or strong coffee to a glass.
  2. Stir in cocoa powder, sugar, and peppermint extract until well mixed.
  3. Pour in cold milk then top it off with ice. Top with whipped cream and crushed candy canes if desired. Serve.

Tips/ Variations

  • Use either cocoa or cacao powder ( I used cacao powder).
  • The amount of peppermint extract you use depends on the brand. I love Nature’s Flavors pure peppermint extract. Compared to other brands, it has a more subtle, natural smell and taste.
  • Use sugar, simple syrup, or your sweetener of choice.
  • Use any kind of milk. I love using Oatly full-fat oat milk because it’s really creamy.
  • Top with whipped cream and crushed candy canes. You could also add chocolate syrup or chocolate curls to make it extra special and festive!
  • You can use decaf instead of regular coffee.

How to Make a Skinny Peppermint Mocha

To make a “skinny” peppermint mocha just use a sugar substitute, low-fat milk, and no whipped cream on the top.

Do I Have to use Espresso?

If you don’t have an espresso machine no problem. Just use strong coffee. Decaf can also be used.
