How to Make Whipped Coffee (Dalgona)

Whipped Coffee (Dalgona) is the latest coffee trend on social media. Made with just 4 ingredients; instant coffee, sugar, hot water, and milk. It’s whipped into a fluffy foam that floats on top of hot or cold milk. It’s so good, you have to try it today!

The name dalgona originated in Korea as a candy similar to a honeycomb toffee. The whipped coffee resembles the candy so a TV personality named the coffee after the Korean treat. After seeing a picture on Instagram, I had to give it a try! So I dug through my camping gear tote to find some instant coffee.

What I love about whipped coffee: besides the fact that it’s fluffy and delicious, I love how versatile it is. It can be made with whatever type of milk and sugar/sweetener you would normally use in your coffee.

Instant Coffee

Instant coffee or instant espresso powder is the first ingredient in this delicious drink. Here are a few instant coffee brands you may want to try (affiliate links):

  • Kava- reduced acid
  • Starbucks Via Instant
  • Highground Organic Instant
  • Mount Hagen
  • Nescafe
  • Medaglia D’Oro (instant espresso powder)

There are also decaf options available.

Sugar

You can use most types of sugar and sweeteners. Sugar is a necessary ingredient to get the coffee to whip up. The original recipe uses equal parts instant coffee, sugar, and water. But for this recipe, we use a little less sugar. I think it is the perfect amount of sweetness.

For a sweeter drink add 1 more tablespoon of sugar.

Milk

Use your milk of choice- cow’s, almond, oat, coconut, plant based, etc.

You can steam or heat the milk for a hot drink, if desired.

Adjust the amount of milk for desired drink strength. Use less milk and more whipped coffee for a stronger drink.

How to Make Whipped Coffee

Instant Coffee or espresso powder, sugar, and hot water.

  1. Pour instant coffee, sugar, and hot water in a mixing bowl. I measure out the water then microwave it for 45 seconds to 1 minute.
  2. Using an electric mixer (hand or stand) whip mixture on medium-high. Whip until mixture stiffens, turns lighter in color, is foamy, and whipped (1-4 minutes). You can also whip by hand if you don’t have a mixer. In my stand mixer, it takes about 3 minutes to whip.
  3. In 2 glasses, pour 3/4-1 cup of milk in each glass with the desired amount of ice.
  4. Spoon whipped coffee on top of the milk.
  5. Stir before tasting, enjoy!

Storage

You can make a large batch to have for the week. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

What to Enjoy with Whipped Coffee
