What is a Garlic Knot?

Garlic knots were created to avoid waste in a New York pizzeria. They would cut leftover pizza dough into strips, tie them into knots, then top with oil or butter, herbs, and garlic.

I love this quick and easy homemade garlic knots recipe! I have made garlic knots with homemade pizza dough in the past and this is just so much quicker and easier. I love the simplicity and flavor of this recipe. Garlic knots make a great appetizer or accompaniment to your main meal.

How to Make Easy Garlic Knots

  1. Unfold pizza dough to make a rectangle. Cut pizza dough into 1 inch thick strips making approximately 15 strips.
  2. Fold strips in half then roll to approximately 8-inch long ropes. Tie dough into a knot then tuck the loose ends underneath. Place knots on a prepared cookie sheet.
  3. In a small bowl, mix melted butter, garlic, parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, and salt. Using a marinade brush, brush tops of the knots with the butter mixture (reserving approximately a third of the mixture for brushing on at the end).
  4. Bake approximately 12 minutes or until golden. Brush with remaining butter mixture.
  5. Serve immediately with warm marinara sauce.

How to Shape Garlic Knots

How to shape garlic knots

Shape the garlic knots by first folding the knots in half. Next, roll the dough into approximately 8-inch ropes. Tie the dough into a knot then tuck the loose ends underneath.

Tips/Variations

  • Use homemade pizza dough instead of store-bought
  • Use fresh chopped parsley instead of dried Italian seasoning

How to Store Homemade Garlic Knots

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. I like to reheat leftovers for approximately 20-30 seconds in the microwave before enjoying them.

You can freeze garlic knots for up to 3 months.
