Whipped Sweet Potatoes are a super easy, savory side dish with only a few ingredients that come together in about 20 minutes. It pairs well with most proteins and makes a great holiday side dish.

I created this recipe last winter around Christmas time so I am excited to finally share it with you. We had some friends over for dinner one evening. I really wanted to make braised beef and was trying to figure out what would be good to serve with it. That’s when the idea was born. Whipped Sweet Potatoes went perfectly and were a hit with all of our friends!

We are having cooler fall weather this week in Colorado and it gets me thinking about the holidays. How about you? Have you thought about the holidays at all? This is my first year as a food blogger and my first time blogging during the holidays. I have so many food ideas for the holidays, I am really excited!

Ingredients

How to Make Whipped Sweet Potatoes

Cook the Sweet Potatoes

For this recipe, I prefer heating the sweet potatoes in the microwave. This is the quickest and easiest way.

  1. Wash and scrub the sweet potatoes. Poke several holes (about 4-5 times) in the sweet potatoes using a fork.
  2. Dampen a couple of paper towels with water and wrap each sweet potato in the damp paper towel.
  3. Microwave on high for 5 minutes. Turn the sweet potatoes using an oven mitt and continue heating for 5-7 minutes or until very soft/mushy.
  4. Slice sweet potatoes down the middle and scoop out sweet potatoes into a stand mixer bowl. Discard the skin.

Whip the Sweet Potatoes

  1. Into the bowl with the sweet potatoes, pour in half and half, butter, and salt.
  2. Using a whisk attachment, whip the mixture on medium to medium-high speed for about 4 minutes or until smooth. Stop and scrape down the sides as needed (you can use either a hand mixer or a stand mixer).
  3. Top with a little more butter and fresh parsley if desired. Serve immediately or keep warm.

How to Keep Sweet Potatoes Warm/Reheat

  • Reheat/keep potatoes warm by placing them in a heat-safe bowl then heat in the microwave or place them in the oven on the keep warm setting.

Can the Sweet Potatoes be made Dairy-Free?

Yes, you can make these whipped sweet potatoes dairy-free by using nondairy, plant-based butter and half and half such as Silk brand.

Storage

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4-5 days.
